I would propose to make full bordered cards a bit larger, not to make the art itself smaller. Something like 508x700, as on magiclibrarities. Though magiclibrarities have a slightly different proportion than cards here...

Cards which don't have anything on the border, probably don't need to be full bordered (all tips cards released so far are not full bordered).

By the way, didn't you also scan card backs for tokens/tip cards?

My proposition is to make them full bordered @ 480x680. Ok with that ?
That sounds fine to me. OTOH, since there aren't that many to begin with, you could provide both sizes. Either way, any size we make won't break anything.

The standards we establish are meant to serve us, not the other way around, so we can be flexible.

Same resolution, higher DPI, to fit the borders into the same number of pixels.

I'd personally go for the same DPI for all HQ scans, making full-bordered pictures slightly bigger in pixels.

both sizes meaning what ? 300dpi ?
er... ark, resolution IS dpi. It's either the same, or higher, can't have both at the same time :)

I'm taking resolution to mean the number of pixels. DPI is how you scale those pixels to inches, which you only really do when printing.

If you make the borderless and bordered images the same number of pixels, they will have a different DPI for printing, which is annoying. It only makes sense to me to increase the number of pixels to the exact amount where the DPI is the same as all the other borderless card images. That way, you can also crop off the border and get the same scale 480x680 insides if you want.

When you save card scans without full borders (as usually), this means you put some AxB inches of the real size into 680x480 pixels, right? So, you obtain the resolution like 680/A DPI.

When you are going to save a card scan with full borders, this means you have not AxB inches of the real size but (A+2b)x(B+2b), where "b" is an additional piece of a single border, right? So, if you save it as 680x480 pixels, you will obtain the resolution like 680/(A+2b) DPI, that is less than 680/A DPI.

So, the idea is to keep the original resolution like 680/A DPI. This means the size of the full bordered scan should be slightly bigger than 680, to compensate additional borders.

A.R, your being a bit confusing with the A and B, so here are the actual numbers:

The actual size of a MTG card is 2 15/32" x 3 7/16" according to both http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magic:_The_Gathering and I agree with my ruler that has 1/32" marks.

I measure a 1/8" black border on all sides. I assume the current full images cut *half* this border off on each side, so 1/16" from each side, or a total of 1/8" from the total size.

This means that the current 480x680 images represent an original area of 2 11/32" x 3 5/16".
Divide the pixels by the inches and you get a current DPI of 204.8 x 205.3 (it's close, but not quite the same horizontally as vertically).

Multiply the original card size by this same DPI, and you get about 506 x 706 pixels. To maintain the ~205 DPI scale that the HQ images use, a full bordered image should have a resolution of 506x706.

ok, i understand what you want.
Still, I stand firmly against calling resolution the image size in pixels. You obviously know what you're talking about, but calling image size resolution can only confuse people. Resolution is only a convention, can be totally independent of image size.
Huggy, so i'm doing them at slightly more than 680x480?

Anyway, this whole discussion is a bit meaningless, since to start with, the ratio of the hq cards is wrong, it was an arbitrary number made to fit correctly in MWS.

If I remember correctly, only Tenth Edition Tip Cards and backsides have some text in a border, right? Tip cards and backsides from the rest of editions should be fine even without full borders...

Yes. Let's make bordered hq pics size 506x706 pixels.

I defer to the popular consensus, you guys are over my head.

If I understand correctly, we normally 1) make HQ's without a border, then 2) add the border back for consistency. In this case we would skip those two steps.

ok, then I'll see which ones have extra stuff on the border, those will be 506*706, the rest are normal.
