Green Stompy...

Postby GandoTheBard » 21 Sep 2008, 15:15

Not exactly Señor Stompy from days gone by but it is fairly fast if you get the ok draw. Anyway its not going to be a tier 1 or tier 2 deck in MTGForge any time soon because the really good green cards arent available but it isnt horrible.

Mana:
Forest x14
Treetop Village x4
Mox Emerald x1
Kodama's Reach x4

Creatures:
Jungle Lion x3 (a very sub optimal one drop but still better than Llanowars in this deck.)
Wild Mongrel x4 (good finisher if your opponent is unwary.
Elvish Warrior x3 (very suboptimal 2 drop)
Sakura-Tribe Elder x4 (mana fetcher/defender)
Rootwalla x3 (suprisingly strong blocker/attacker)
Force of Savagry x3 (well if you get the silly gaea's anthem down this can be ok...but not thrilled with it, thank goodness for Mongrels)
Groundbreaker x4 (Ball lightning!)
Nessian Courser x3 (a decent 3 drop if not amazing)

Spells:
Garruk Wildspeaker x3
Giant Growth x3
Gaea's Anthem x4

:( In the 6 games I played with this deck against the ai, I never once got a Force of Savagery or a Groundbreaker.
Then I switch and let the ai play this deck and... Groundbreaker on turn 3 and again on turn 4. Just not funny!
On game 2 it dropped a Gaea's Anthem then a Force of Savagery and the next turn another Gaea's Anthem. (Thanksfully, after the attackphase but still, it hurt.
I used the new version of my pumped elves deck, will upload it as soon as I am really happy with it, still trying things out with it.
But anyway, I managed to win because my Wellwisher kept me alive when the big boys attacked me and the Groundbreakers die after they hit you so you ignore them mostly. The Force of Savagery hits hard but has a weak toughness so a simple token elf usually kills it.

Still... I got none of them big baddies and compy gets them by the buckloads! GRRRRRRR!
I need more playtesting as I want to get that Force of Savagery in play and attack with it at least once!

Final note: I really miss the mana elves in this deck. I would probably kick out the Jungle Lion for some Llanowar Elves. With a deck like this, you need speed. And with only 19 mana sources, this deck is cutting it close. Too close for my liking. But then, I like elves. I am their friend.

Yeah back in the day I made sure to obtain my 4 beta elves for playing but I often find in stompy decks that what I really want is a more efficient 1 drop, not necessarily a creature mind you but a 1/1 elf with mana ability is only sometimes (situationally) good. And you can get caught in that trap of not having enough land but having a couple elves and not parising and then losing the elves to control or burn. So Im cautious with putting Llanowars in decks. Now truly this isnt a real stompy deck as that isnt possible with the cards available and its not a deck with lots of high cost cards either so the mana accelleration isnt really needed either. But to conclude if you enjoy it after tweaking then tweak away. It is really about having fun with it.

Also dont forget you have mana fetchers x8...if you are adding more mana sources then you might want to tweak the number of fetchers down a bit and add something else instead.

Ok, new game, new chances.
Oh goody! I start with a hand of 3 forests, 2 (yes 2!) Force of Savagery, Giant growth and a Sakura-tribe Elder.
4 turns later... still no Gaea's Anthem.
I am dropping plenty of stuff but not them big boys.
Another 4 more turns pass. Then I draw my first... Garruk wildspeaker. Still no anthem and I kill the ai with my army of smaller stuff. Still 2 Force of Savagery in my hand...
This deck hates me. I am sure of it! 8-[ *twitch-twitch*

In the games Ive played with it so far I havent gotten one either. :D The shuffler is not your friend. Ive noticed the AI tends to get much nicer hands with the same decks than we do.
