Removing cards from Forge
by johncpatterson » 16 Aug 2011, 01:05
Hi all, I'm just now getting into Forge and loving it! Question, I am a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of cards, and was wondering if there's a way to delete sets of cards from the program. That way, quest mode would only use perhaps a couple of the newer sets, much like Standard tournament format. Thanks a ton!

There is not a good way of removing cards from quest mode.
When starting a new quest you can click the box for:
Standard(Type 2) Starting Pool to have the initial cards come from recent sets.
This only affects the first set of cards that you get.
All future cards will be from the full card list.
There has been some talk of updating the quest part of Forge to allow you to win booster packs from specific sets, but this is not implemented yet.

I see. Is there an easy way then to simply remove certain cards from the game itself? Like certain sets?

if you did this, and one of your opponent's decks required a card that you removed, the game would likely close due to an error {crash}.johncpatterson wrote:I see. Is there an easy way then to simply remove certain cards from the game itself? Like certain sets?
if you'd like to formally request a feature, you can follow these directions.

I'll definitely make sure to request that feature, thanks for the suggestion! In the meantime, is there a way to make sure that the AI doesn't draw from one of the deleted sets, perhaps by editing one of the txt files to make it appear as if a certain set isn't even available?

are you asking if the quest mode will omit opponents who use cards outside the sets you want to use? in theory, yes. but it sounds like a lot of work to me.johncpatterson wrote:I'll definitely make sure to request that feature, thanks for the suggestion! That is one part of the question, definitely, but one poster already mentioned that deleting decks form quest mode alone isn't yet a feature. Considering this limitation at the moment, I would hope to simply remove cards from the entire game instead. I wouldn't think it would be too difficult, for example I see a couple of files and folders which lists the different sets such as blocks.txt or setdata.txt, or perhaps the Boosterdata folder. Deleting some of these files/folders or deleting some of the code in the txt files I would think would "trick" the game into thinking that those files/cards aren't available in the game. I just need to know which files or code to delete to remove any given set from the game. I suppose I would be doing the opposite of what you do when you add a new set or cards to the game.
Again, the purpose of this would be to potentially only allow say M12 cards only in the entire game, thus making Forge really only have around 300 cards or so, a much more manageable number for a newbie like myself
I do realize, however, that I can draft and booster deck from certain sets, but just not from quest mode or constructed.
Thanks for your time! I'm new to Forge and am loving it!

Yeah, Sloth, Corwin and I have spent a LOT
of time over the last year or so developing the opponent decks for quest mode. The idea is to increase the number of opponents that we can face while giving each opponent a deck of cards with a recognizable theme.
It would just about ruin the quest mode if we prevented the AI from using most of the decks that we have carefully created.
On the other hand, I like the idea of restricting the human to sets of cards rather than the entire card pool as this would improve the chance of developing a deck theme for the human to play.

as usual, Chris is spot on. it would be far easier to limit the human's card pool than the opponents'.Chris H. wrote:On the other hand, I like the idea of restricting the human to sets of cards rather than the entire card pool as this would improve the chance of developing a deck theme for the human to play.

Ah, completely understood. I didn't take into account that each quest opponent would have their own unique deck from all the sets. I'll certainly add that idea that you mentioned to the feature request thread. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond to my posts, you guys are awesome!

If you do add something like that, could it be made optional? There are players that like having such a huge pool of cards to draw from.

i suspect the default behavior would not change. besides, i have not been seeing any developer activity in this direction. here are some of the more important things on our plates.timmermac wrote:If you do add something like that, could it be made optional?
